I love to walk my third grade daughter to school every day. Even though we pass by the same flowers on our 3 blocks to the front door, we take a moment to notice how things have changed, what is new, what is letting go.
She is getting a bit too cool for mom, but she still holds my hand half way there. We noticed the way the morning dew twinkles on this rose, the way it contrasts with the blue of the sky. We took this photo together, and she was lost in the moment, noticing the drops of perfection.
These are the moments that I cultivate conscientiously. I want my daughters to gather goodness each day, to hold them over for the tough times. When kids are cruel (as they will be), or when teachers have high expectations (as they should), or when Mom and Dad expect participation in family chores and activities (as we must), my daughters will have these moments of goodness and beauty for balance.
It's not easy being a kid, or an adult, for that matter. When we take a moment to reconnect with everyday miracles, we can remember the joy that is always around us.
